I don't think Specter's switch is cause for exhiliration. The whole thing about sixty and a filibuster proof Senate is overrated--something for the talking heads to jabber about without mentioning how few votes break down along party lines. Last week, it was very unlikely that Specter would ever be the sixtieth vote for some enlightened piece of legislation. It's still unlikely.
Besides, the Republican party needs people like Specter more than the Democrats do. There ought to be an opposition party, not just a remnant of madmen drawling through flecks of foam.
