An unmarried heterosexual man invades a household headed by two moms. Well, it's actually headed by one mom, the one who is an OB-GYN, played by Annette Benning. The other mom, played by Julianne Moore, is a little more of a hippie and vocational drifter. In an early scene, she goes down on Benning while gay porn--male stars--plays on the bedroom TV. As a character in a Woody Allen movie remarks, when it comes to human sexuality, normal is not a useful concept.
Anyway, the teen-aged children, a boy and a girl, make contact with the sperm donor who got them both off to a start. You'd think that lesbians might be immune to his charms, but no! The mom-mom has grown weary of Dr Mom, the workaday success, whom she stilll loves, sort of, but not so much to keep her out of the old sperm donor's bed. He is more understanding, you see. The whole situation is a well-worn path but now it is being trod by lesbians. OMG!
With Mark Ruffalo as the donor. For some reason, he talks like Marlon Brando's godfather. Written by Lisa Cholodenko and Stuart Blumberg and directed by Cholodenko.
President Obama, who self-reports that he "struggles with this issue," might be made uncomfortable by the presentation of a de facto gay marriage. The movie reminded me of a quip by Minnesota's junior senator, Al Franken, who, expressing his support for gay marriage, said there was no reason for straights to monopolize the misery. That the principals in The Kids Are All Right are less wholesome than the stars of gay marriage posters is a considerable relief. The movie is pretty good, especially considering how terrible it could have been.
