Seeing Charles Barkley on stage making the case for Doug Jones in Alabama's Senate race reminded me of one of my favorite Sir Charles stories, a political one. Back when W was president, Charles was home in Alabama with his extended family for Thanksgiving. Everyone was grousing about the president when Charles announced that he supported him. There was a chorus of groans and indignant questions. How could he be for a president who was only for the rich? Charles is reported to have replied, "You all keep forgetting: I'm rich."
He made a course correction in 2006, stating, "I was a Republican until they lost their minds." He's now all-in for Jones but he doesn't make as compelling a case as the above peanut farmer from the rural southeastern corner of the state. What a prince!
