One of the two major tribes in Washington, D.C., is still recognizably the one about which Will Rogers remarked,
"I am not a member of any organized political party. I am a Democrat."
The other one, however, is in motion--during my voting lifetime, from Reagan's empty good cheer to the thoroughgoing vileness of President Trump and his swarm of fawning enablers. At least Trump is making his predecessors appear tolerable in relief. If W gives Michelle Obama one more cough drop at a state funeral, I'll probably altogether forget "Mission Accomplished" and the way he strutted on the ship's deck, in full fighter bomber regalia he'd donned for the occasion, like a male model on the runway. Probably no one will recall that episode at his state funeral. I think W's finest moment is going to have been when, after Trump's Inaugural Address on "American carnage," he reportedly turned to Hillary Clinton and whispered, "That was some weird shit."
