While trying to verify that our favorite bakery is open on the Fourth, I saw the above graphic on their Facebook page, and it reminded me of conversations overheard at the kitchen table more than 50 years ago. My dad would be explaining to my mom how to get somewhere she wanted to go.
MY MOM: Which side of the street is it on?
MY DAD: That would depend, Yvonne, on which direction you're travelling.
MY MOM: Why must you be so difficult and haughty? I only want to know which side of the street it's on.
MY DAD: Well, if the store across the street is on "the right-hand side," then it's on "the left-hand side." [He achieves the quotation marks with the inflection of his voice.]
MY MOM: Was that so hard? Thank you!
MY DAD: [Reads newspaper.]
MY MOM: [Drinks coffee.]
