My youngest with her trick-or-treat running mate from next door. The older one spurned Halloween in order to lie on the couch, clicking between the World Series and the Vikings. Loving her is like loving myself.
St. Augustine's views on the depravity of children have been frequently denounced but then comes Halloween and one of his critics who can't be home in the evening leaves a pail of candy on the front step along with written instructions to "take just one." I watched and listened as a little boy, escorted by his dad, walked up to the pail, peered in, with disappointment declared it to be empty. His dad suggested it would be "really cool" if he dropped in a few of his candies, so that it wouldn't be empty for the next trick-or-treater.
"No," said the little boy, "I don't want to do that."
